Summer 2026 - Building and Performing Soliloquies
Class Description
Soliloquies are building blocks for writing and performance, from theater to poetry slams. They hold an audience’s attention while delivering information through emotion and breath. Soliloquies help elevate the confidence of the writer/performer and give space for an uninterrupted flow in presenting an idea.
This workshop will guide participants through writing a soliloquy, learning key elements of performance such as prop handling, breath, emphasis, and cadence. By the end of the workshop, participants will have a performance piece that can also be published in written form. The final workshop will be a public performance for family, friends, and friends of the museum.
Day 1 will introduce the concept of the soliloquy, demonstrate examples, and present prompts and brainstorming exercises for Participants to build their own soliloquies.
Participants may bring their own props to help prompt ideas for their soliloquies.
Day 2 will guide participants through generative and revision exercises to hone their soliloquy.
Day 3 will introduce the principles of performance and guide participants through performance exercises including prompts.
Day 4, participants will rehearse their soliloquy and plan for the performance, including considering costumes and props.
Day 5 will be the performance. Participants will be able to invite friends and family to watch and the museum will open its doors to the public.
