Fundamentals of Photography

Class Description
Led by professional photographer Erica Whiting, this four-week class introduces participants to the foundational skills of photography. Students will learn basic camera anatomy, exposure, shutter speed, depth of field, and navigating settings. Each week includes hands-on practice photographing still-life objects and subjects in natural light, as well as learning to freeze or blur motion intentionally. Participants will also learn to import and view photos on a computer. This class is ideal for beginners or anyone new to their camera.

Materials Required
Participants will need a digital camera (DSLR or point and shoot) to take photographs, a camera card, computer to view their images on, and photo viewing software. Students should also bring their camera manuals ( these can typically be found online for free if you no longer have the original from manufacturer’s websites). About the Instructor Erica Whiting
Erica Whiting is a multidisciplinary artist and creative photographer focusing on non-traditional and experimental portraits using mixed media and in-camera techniques. Her work has been exhibited in the Nicole + Harry Martin Spring Show at the Erie Art Museum and The Armerie Show at the Bayfront Gallery in Erie, PA and her photography has been featured in the British magazine Rock & Roll Bride, the Unscripted Posing App, Business Insider, and the New York Post.
Most recently Erica was accepted into the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh. She was a Sandbox Resident Artist at FEED Media Center exploring new media and projection photography during the Summer of 2025. Erica currently teaches photography and other art classes while working in her home studio. She also owns and operates Erica Whiting Photography offering creative portraits for individuals, brands and couples.
She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design with a minor in Art History and a Certification of Art Education from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. She spent six years as a public art teacher in the Erie School District before becoming a full-time artist.
