Wilderness Therapy Experience: Connecting with Family Tree

Class Description

Join Sylvie Silva, Founder & Director of The Cicada Institute, for an immersive wilderness therapy experience titled "Connecting with Family Tree" at the Erie Art Museum and Frontier Park.

In this one-session class, Sylvie will guide participants through an exploration of the Family Tree exhibit at the museum before embarking on a journey to Frontier Park for a wilderness therapy experience. In this experience students will be guided through a meditative walk, learn about land recognition, which is recognition of Indigenous Lands. Students will also participate in an eco-friendly art making activity where using biodegradable glue to create mandalas on the tree trunks using flowers, leaves, and other natural materials. The Art will temporarily be displayed at the park until the natural elements make them disappear. Create art that will spark joy and curiosity to those who find these treasures.

All necessary materials will be provided or foraged; transportation will be arranged through The Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority. Participants are advised to dress appropriately for the weather and are encouraged to bring a water bottle and snacks. This is a wonderful activity for families but be advised that children under 16 MUST be accompanied by an adult at all times. Parents and children must all be registered for this course.

Meet the Instructor: As an experienced triple-certified educator and counselor, Sylvie has dedicated her career to the growth and support of teenagers facing various challenges through her organization, The Cicada Institute. Through her profound engagement with diverse communities, she discovered a common understanding that no one is immune to the harsh realities of life.
