This Basic Photography Workshop covers the concepts of using a digital (DSLR – Digital Single Lens Reflex) or mirrorless camera, changing lenses, choosing camera settings to obtain the correct exposure, and the aesthetic principles related to focus, light, color and composition and developing a photographic vision. The course addresses digital file formats, storage and handling of images and introduces the student to post-processing and enhancement of images. Each class will include a practice session and an assignment for the next class. The final session will include an evaluation and critique of images captured by each of the participants.

Students entering the course must have a digital (DSLR) or mirrorless camera with the ability to change exposure settings (aperture, ISO and shutter speed) and preferably a camera with interchangeable lenses. Students should also bring the instruction manual for their camera.

Objectives of the class:

  • Student recognizes and understands the basic technical, and compositional concepts of photography.

  • Student demonstrates a competency in the digital photographic workflow including operating a DSLR camera, storing digital files on a memory card, understanding the difference between RAW and JPEG file formats, and importing images to a computer through in-class practice sessions.

  • Student demonstrates an appreciation and understanding of photography as a means of visual and artistic expression by producing photographs for class assignments.

  • Student develops the ability to evaluate their own photographs and those of others through class critiques.

The instructors for the class are all members of the Photographic Arts Society of Northwestern Pennsylvania (PASNWPA), a 501(c)(7) non-profit organization that promotes and supports fine art photography in the northwestern Pennsylvania area by showcasing the works of its accomplished and award-winning contemporary photographers, defining photographic fine art by educating the community with gallery shows and programs, and teaching those who aspire to advancing their photography skills.
