Rust Dyeing
With Sarah Howard and Pam Laskowski
About the Instructor
Sarah Howard is a multi-faceted artist. Her earliest creations were done with pencils, black and white illustrations that created detailed shapes and textures transitioned into watercolor paintings. Pairing a career as a Visual Merchandiser with a degree in Interior Design her creative path led her to explore furniture design, 3-dimensional sculpture, repurposing objects and photography. Her creative journey has always been supported by her family but the non-traditional empowerment that came from a female college professor gave Sarah the confidence to try any modality, use failure as a learning tool and to know there’s more than one way to create art.
Currently Sarah is a teaching artist inspiring students with the same non-traditional empowerment at the Neighborhood Art House and The Dafmark Creative Arts Center both in Erie PA. Her students are using power tools (drills, jig saws, rivet guns ect.) to complete projects, as individuals and as groups, that include upcycled materials. The projects are geared toward creative problem solving and student artists are encouraged to follow through with design choices in order to experience the process of failure which in turn allows for another opportunity to creatively problem solve in a safe, supportive, non-shaming environment.
