The Roycroft Shops 1894-1915
Lynette Rhodes, 1975

A unique segment of the Arts and Crafts Movement which swept the U.S. in the late 19th and early 20th centuries is examined in this catalogue. The Roycroft shops were begun as a printery in 1894 by Elbert Hubbard, an American promoter of social change through art. As it developed, the Roycroft grew to include a press which produced fine books and two major periodicals, and shops producing furniture, leather crafts and copperware. Through Hubbard, the Roycroft became a progressive American institution that sponsored social and cultural enlightenment through its products and programs. Published in conjunction with a 1975 exhibition, The Roycroft Shops is a pioneering examination of Roycroft craft items and the artist who created them. With historical advertisements. 11" x 8". Saddle stitched, 20 pages.
