Amina Figarova is a remarkable composer and pianist. Classically trained in her native Azerbaijan,
she plunged into jazz as a very young woman and studied in the Netherlands and at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Averaging an album a year since 1994, she has had an astonishing international career. After stops at the Athens Jazz Festival, New Orleans
Jazz Festival, Salvador Brazil’s Bahia Jazz Festival, South Africa’s Capetown International Jazz Festival, the JakArt Festivalin Indonesia, Yoshi´s in Oakland, CA, and New York’s Blue Note Jazz Club we are pleased (and extremely lucky) to have her perform at the Erie Art Museum.
Amina and her sextet play music that is both polished and loose. Her compositions give her sidemen lots of room to shine, and critics have particularly praised Bart Platteau for his ability to play a phalanx of flutes
with an astonishingly seductive tone. Powerful, lush, layered, magnificent, these are the words often used by jazz critics to define Figarova’s sound.
Hear samples of her work on her website: www.aminafigarova.com, and
take advantage of the rare opportunity to have these international
musicians perform in our own backyard.
