Patricia Bellan-Gillen: Zoo•Logic
January 11, 2008 through April 6, 2008
In the Main Gallery
Patricia Bellan-Gillen’s paintings dominate the Main Floor Gallery with vast planes of vivid color and masterfully drafted animal imagery. These new works continue her balancing act of realism and abstraction, serious and silly, natural and cultural.
Her paintings can be read like books; viewers may find themselves challenged by references to On the Origin of Species, The Wizard of Oz, and the Bible along with imagery drawn from mediaeval painting, prints, and pop culture. “Then again,” the artist says, “maybe I just like to paint animals.”
Bellan-Gillen’s paintings gives just as much pleasure to the eye as to the mind. Viewers are presented with beautiful colors and textures, and of course the animals, brilliantly rendered and larger than life.
Patricia Bellan-Gillen will present a gallery talk about her paintings on Gallery Night, March 7, 2008 beginning at 7:30 p.m.
