The 84th Annual Spring Show presents 83 works by 73 artists who live within 250 miles of Erie. Visitors will find works in a wide variety of media: oil on canvas, watercolor, pencil and charcoal drawing, an array of printmaking techniques and photography, ceramics, textiles, wood and metalwork, assemblages of found objects ... and an image printed with clay dust on 80 pounds of salt.
Juror Janet Koplos, senior editor for Art in America, put together a show that, in the end, was based not so much on her own personal preferences as the themes she saw running through the submitted material itself (she had 692 entries from 435 artists to choose from). Drawing out these themes resulted in a collection of art that, despite its variety, forms a cohesive whole.
Visitors will find themselves among metaphorical dinosaurs, Mayan ruins, fine jewelry, a surreal twisted clay tower, and a boisterous set of miniature carnival rides piloted by toy cars. The Spring Show is a fine opportunity to see our region’s wealth of artistic talent on display, informed as it is by the unique perspective the area seems to engender.
