Kids as Curators
February 9, 2007 through March 24, 2007
Annex Gallery
Musical instruments constructed out of found objects, a sunset collaged with collected paraphernalia, brain maps and related silhouettes – these are the divergent paths taken by our local middle school students while curating and designing a showcase featuring their personal predilections. Since this fall, students from Wayne, St. Boniface, and Walnut Creek have worked with art, social studies, science, and language arts teachers learning how to apply the museum process in tandem with the basic concepts of their curriculum. Their distinctive youthful playfulness spills out in their selection, evaluation, interpretation, and presentation of their objects of interest.
Last year’s Kids as Curators exhibit was a great success. Union City students paid homage to the Union City Chair Company by creating thrones devoted to their particular obsessions. Students at Iroquois, inspired by Katrina and the drama of our local meteorology, created an exhibit around weather accessories. Erie’s Pfieffer-Burleigh students collaborated with a local artist on an installation from found objects. St. Andrews’ students in league with a local sculptor offered us a glimpse of what different generations reveal and conceal. Visitors wrote, [include quotes from last year’s visitors log]
This year’s exhibit will not disappoint. Students at Wayne gathered tin cans, wood, copper pipe, a retired shop vac, etc. and crafted sound-making objects as the centerpiece for their musical offering. St. Boniface’s students expressed their newfound understanding of the brain in a variety of intriguing visuals, drawing the viewer in with interactive activities. The students at Walnut Creek have artfully recreated our scenic bayfront complete with skyline, beach, and sunset.
The Kids as Curators project is supported by a major grant from:
Istitute of Musuem and Library Services, and generous support from the Erie Arts Endowment of the Arts Council of Erie and HIGHMARK Blue Cross Blue Shield.
