The photographs in The View From Here explore the environments of Central Europe and the American Midwest, demonstrating both the differences and commonalities that exist between these two regions. Twenty-two contemporary art photographers bring together these different cultures in an exhibition for the first time.

The exhibition utilizes four broad themes through which the artists explore the issues of their homelands: natural landscapes, the built environment, social commentary procured through the artists' observations and experiences, and reflections on cultural values. The contributing artists present powerful perspectives on their environments, including Tyagan Miller observations of the lives of Hispanic tobacco field migrants in Southern Indiana, András Bozsó's look at the disenfranchised homeless community in Budapest, and Melissa Ann Pinney's critique of girl culture in Midwestern America.

The View From Here is the third installment of the Heartland Project, an artistic exchange between Central European and Midwestern America that has previously produced Illusions of Eden: Visions of the American Heartland, and Aspects/Positions: Fifty Years of Art in Central Europe, 1949-1999. The curator and principal author of The View From Here, Catherine Evans, is also the Curator of Photography at the Columbus Museum of Art.

The exhibit was produced by Arts Midwest and the Ohio Arts Council's International Program, and organized in partnership with the Ludwig Museum Budapest - Museum of Contemporary Art. Funding in the U.S. is provided by The Trust for Mutual Understanding, the Ohio Arts Foundation, and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. Previous venues of The View From Here include the Stone Bell House in Prague, Ludwig Museum Budapest - Museum of Contemporary Art, the Riffe Gallery in Columbus, and the Minnesota Centerfor Photography in Minneapolis.

A reception will be held on Friday, February 13 from 7 to 9 p.m.
