Joseph Allen Popp's Weirdo Theatre

April 15 - May 30, 2003

Joseph Allen Popp’s Weirdo Theatre, an installation by Joseph Popp, was on display in the Frame Shop Gallery.

Known for his collages incorporating images in multiple layers of glass, the Erie Art Museum’s Frame Shop manager Joe Popp displayed a collection of his inkjet prints. Inspired by pop culture’s onslaught of graphic material, Popp’s collages tightly combine familiar images, leaving no space unused. Recalling his childhood fascination with television, Popp presents the viewer with a visual wonderland. He uses the intensity of advertising, minus the sales pitch.

Popp has been making art all his life despite never having had formal art training. His work was the subject of a one-man show at Schanz Gallery in 2001. He has also exhibited works at Glass Growers Gallery, the New Works Gallery, and has been accepted to the Annual Spring Show several times.

Also an accomplished musician, Popp has composed and mixed his own scores which he has combined with his visual art, he has formed several bands and currently is working on a collaborative project between his new band, also called Weirdo Theatre, and the Shen & Bones dance troupe. Joe Popp has worked as the Museum’s framer for the past thirteen years
