Histories by Lissa Hunter

September 13, 2003 - February 8, 2004

Lissa Hunter has assembled a collection of thoughtful and graceful works by combining basketry, pottery, written words, and found natural objects such as leaves and stones. An accomplished fiber artist for over twenty years, Hunter creates works with an evident narrative quality, pulling subject matter from her personal life, universal small moments, and even large societal issues. Hunter invites the viewer to associate their own history and interpretation to each piece, stating that "the stories come later when a viewer adds his or her own experiences to these objects, creating another history and new tales."

Hunter is also an accomplished writer; her articles have appeared in nationally distributed publications including Fiberarts, Art in America, Threads Magazine, and The Newsbasket. She has also contributed to Papermaking for Basketry, edited by Lynn Stearns, and The Basketmaker’s Art, edited by Rob Pulleyn.

Lissa Hunter is currently a member of the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts Board of Directors. Collections of Hunter’s work have been on display at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Fine Arts museums of San Francisco, and are on permanent display at the American Craft Museum in New York City. Her work has recently been showcased at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and at the 50th Anniversary Exhibition of the Center for Maine Contemporary Art. A reception will be held on Friday, September 19 from 6 to 8 p.m.
