Works from the Collection of Sam Pees
September 2 - October 17, 2003
Erie Art Museum Frame Shop Gallery
A selection of works by contemporary
Indonesian artists comprises this exhibition from local collector, Sam Pees.
The focus of the exhibition is Umar Sumarta, currently living and working
in Bandung, West Java. Sumarta explores the Sudanese mystic traditions in
his art, depicting spirits, ghosts, ceremony, magic, as well as daily village
life. One of his preferred motifs is horses and their role in the certain
local ceremonies. His style ranges from surreal dream sequences as in traditional
Indonesian art to a painterly style illustrating European influences. Sumarta
has exhibited widely in Jakarta, Bandung, and Bali.
