Toy Series
by Suzanne Proulx

August 27-October 25, 2002

Stuffed animals from flea markets, thrift shops, and rescued from the trash are re-sewn and manipulated into hybrids of humans, animals, and toys in Suzanne Proulx’s Toy Series. The sculptures were created in response to the artist’s miscarriage, then successful pregnancy and motherhood. Proulx’s toys address the themes of play, mothering, healing, and the universal childhood desire to give one’s toys a spirit. Her personified toys are meant to evoke the viewer’s memories of childhood; frightening, sad, and even funny.

Proulx received her Master of Fine Arts from Syracuse University and has exhibited widely in group and solo shows in contemporary galleries across the region, including the Erie Art Museum’s 79th Annual Spring Show.
