Painted Ponies

June 29 - September 8, 2002

Outer Row Stander
Crafted by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company in 1932
From the collection of Bud and Mary Weckesser

An exhibition comprised of 16 superior examples of hand-carved, hand-painted carousel animals, these wooden creatures are regarded as one of the highest forms of folk art. On loan from four private collections, the animals were created by the major carvers and carving companies who produced carousel decor at the beginning of the twentieth century. The exhibit included horses as well as a menagerie of other animals, such as a pig, deer, rabbit, and ostrich. The carousel figures came from amusement parks across the country, the majority from Pennsylvania, and a few of which were from the original carousel at Erie’s own Waldameer Park.
