Pots, Fish and More:
Ceramic Works by Tom Hubert

September 14 - December 2, 2001

Tall Stacked Teapot

Pots, Fish and More explored the talents of ceramic artist and Mercyhurst College art professor Tom Hubert. As a participant in the GoFish! Exhibition, Hubert created one of the most unusual and ambitious fish sculptures, entitled Baked Fish (on display at the Blasco Library), which features ceramic versions of Lake Erie fish applied like fishscales to the giant fish sculpture. The experience of creating this work inspired Hubert to explore these forms further. The results—colorful trout-like and bass-like forms—are a marked contrast with the works for which Hubert has become well-known both locally and throughout the United States.

These familiar works involve combinations of wheel thrown and hand built parts which range from geometric to asymmetrical curvilinear in form. Abstract teapots, handled bowls and lidded jars are glazed in colorful, geometric patterns immediately recognizable as Tom Hubert originals.

Hubert first received his Bachelor of Arts in Art Education from Mercyhurst College in 1977 and went on to receive his Masters in Fine Arts from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1980. He is currently the Art Department Director at Mercyhurst College. In 1995, Hubert was honored with the National Endowment of the Arts/Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation Regional Fellowship Award and the Jurors Award at the Erie Summer Festival of the Arts Panorama Show in 1996. He has since held individual exhibitions and appeared in many group and juried exhibitions. His works are sold in galleries all over the country and are included in a number of important collections.
