Oriental Painting
Esther Hong
Beginning students will learn the basics of oriental painting focusing on four paragons: the orchid, the bamboo, the plum, and the chrysanthemum. Intermediate students will learn how to paint a few flowers and a variety of fruits. Advanced students will learn how to paint trees, rocks, mountains, and waterfalls for landscapes.

Wednesdays for 6 weeks

Watercolor Painting
Wilda Sundberg
Using transparent watercolors, students work on location when weather permits and the Annex on rainy days. Instructor gives demonstrations and critiques; emphasizing technique, color, and design. Beginners have the opportunity of working with advanced students in class.

Still Life Painting
Fran Schanz
This class is structured for beginners to advanced painters. In a workshop setting, students have the opportunity to interact with each other, as well as the instructor, to maximize the class experience. Students work in their choice of oils or acrylics and learn new ways of approaching the still life. Bring a drawing pad and pencil to the first class.

Beginning Drawing and Painting

This class will introduce basic techniques to adults who have little or no art experience. Students will create still lifes, figure drawings, and utilize the art from current exhibits. This class will provide a broad exposure to a variety of media such as pencil, conté crayon, watercolor, and acrylic. This class is also appropriate for youth looking for a broadly focused art experience.

New Approaches to Life Drawing

Seed Bead Jewelry
Christine French
Exploring different beading techniques, students will create a variety of seed bead jewelry. Students will create a bracelet, a necklace, and several pairs of earrings.

Beginning Digital Photography
Art Becker
Covering the basic use of a digital camera, students will learn how to compose and capture the moment, how to photograph still and moving objects, how to use light, and how to work in low-light conditions. Students will be introduced to photoediting software. Although a camera with interchangeable lenses is ideal, any digital camera is acceptable for use with this class.

Advanced Digital Photography
Art Becker
Students will work on developing their own artistic vision and learn to “see” as a photographer, while advancing their technical knowledge. This class will present shooting at twilight and at night, and cover studio lighting techniques. Students should already fully understand the basic features of their camera and photoediting software. A camera that has options beyond automatic settings is advised.

Ceramics For Adults
Kathe Umlauf
Students will learn to throw vessels on the wheel (including mugs, bowls, and containers) and learn various hand-building techniques (to make wall plaques, tiles, terra-cotta animals, and other sculpture). Students will also learn proper handling and glazing methods. Each week will feature demonstrations and personalized instruction. Beginners learn essentials, more advanced students work more independently and focus on personal goals. Each student will create many finished pieces. Ages 15 to adult. Students can also work independently on Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoons.

10 weeks

Experimental Pottery

Students will create wheel-thrown forms and experiment with altering those pieces with dissection and ressamblage. If you have experience working with the pottery wheel and want an opportunity to use the wheel in new ways, this course is for you. Advanced hand-building methods will also be covered. Students can also work independently on Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoons.

First Fridays
An interactive program for adults and their 3–5 year olds. Using music, storytelling, and movement everyone explores a current exhibit and Museum education staff guides participants through a related art-making activity. $5 per child, those with Family Museum Memberships are free.

January 4, 2008 Winter Trees
We will explore the beautiful watercolor landscapes of Lee Steadman and paint our own winter watercolors using a resist technique.

February 1, 2008 Zoo • Logic
We will take a walk on the wild side spotting many fantasy animals in paintings by Patricia Bellan-Gillen and create our own mythical creatures.

March 7th, 2008 Kids As Curators
Kids love stuff and we are sure you and your little one will too! Come see what kind of collections area middle schoolers have deemed “Museum worthy” and put your hands on activities created by kids, for kids.

April 4, 2008 Bronzes
“Hello! Statue?” We will meet and greet a selection of bronze statues from our permanent collection and make some 3D art of our own.


KIDS CLASSES
Parent Child Clay

Here is a chance for children to learn alongside a parent, grandparent, or adult friend. All participants will have an opportunity to throw cups and bowls on professional quality potter’s wheels, and learn how to create tiles, boxes, and animal sculptures. Everyone will also learn proper handling and glazing methods. The small class size ensures personalized instruction for everyone, making it a great experience for beginners. Everyone will create lots of finished pieces to take home. Ages 6 to 96. Students 9 and older may take class without adult.

Tuesdays for 10 weeks
starting January 15, 4–5:30 p.m.

Drawing, Painting, Printing

For kids who love art. This class is a chance for kids to experiment with lots of different media and work directly with the art on display in the galleries. Students will also learn about some of the formal properties of art (color, line, texture) while they are developing their own artistic vision. This class will cover using pencils, pastels, ink, and different kinds of paint. Ages 7 to 11.
