First Fridays
A Preschool Program
Join us the First Friday of every month from 10 – 11 a.m. for a special program for 3 – 6 year olds and their families. Museum staff lead adults and kids through exploring one of the exhibits using story, song and art making.
Cost is $5 per child, free to those with family memberships.
Please call to reserve a space in advance.
Fantastical Art for Kids
Jude Shingle
Kids experiment with drawing, painting, printmaking and more as we create art around the theme of Fantasy. Students explore the museum’s current exhibits to inspire their creation of fierce dragons, beautiful princesses, and a world limited only by their imagination. For kids ages 6 – 10.

Photography for Kids

This class will introduce both the foundations of photography and how to discuss works of art. Through demonstrations, group projects, and individual work, students learn about the interaction of light and materials to form photographs. Additionally, students will spend time looking at images, talking about what they see, and explore how to make great photographs on their own. For those aged 8 – 13. Access to a digital camera and a way to print photos is strongly advised.

Parent Child Clay

Here is a chance for children to learn alongside a parent, grandparent, or adult friend. All participants will have an opportunity to throw cups and bowls on professional quality potter’s wheels, and learn how to create tiles, trophy cups, and cookies jars. Everyone will also learn proper handling and glazing methods. The small class size ensures personalized instruction for everyone, making it a great experience for beginners. Everyone will create lots of finished pieces to take home. Ages 6 to 96. Students 9 and older may take class without adult.
Sundays for 7 weeks
Starting April 11 from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m.

Beginning Digital Photography
Art Becker
Covering the basic use of a digital camera, students learn how to compose and capture the moment, how to photograph still and moving objects, how to use light, and how to work in low light conditions. Students are introduced to photo editing software. Although a camera with interchangeable lenses is ideal, any digital camera is acceptable for use with this class.

Advanced Digital Photography

Students work on developing their own artistic vision and learn to “see” as a photographer, while advancing their technical knowledge. This class presents shooting at twilight and at night, and covers some studio lighting techniques. Students should already fully understand the features of their camera and photo editing software. A camera that has options beyond automatic settings is advised.

Beginning Drawing

This class introduces basic techniques to adults who have little or no art experience. Students create still lifes, figure drawings, and utilize the art from current exhibits. This class provides exposure to a variety of drawing media such as pencil and conte crayon. This class is also appropriate for youth looking to hone their drawing skills.

New Approaches to Life Drawing

In an open studio setting, students work from photos and from a nude model to create quick gestures and work up to longer poses. This class welcomes both beginners and seasoned artists.

Precious Metals Jewelry Making
Dan and Jan Niebauer
Students learn jewelry fabricating and casting techniques (from “beginner basics” to advanced) and learn how to use the traditional tools and gain an appreciation of the century old methods of making handcrafted jewelry. The first class is devoted to a slide show and discussion. Each student is briefed on good jewelry design and layout techniques while following an outlined personal “project action plan.” Each student then develops his or her individual project from idea to completion. Tools are supplied, but not materials. A list of materials, shop rules and handouts is distributed at the first class.

Beginning Acrylic Painting

This class introduces basic techniques to those who have little or no art experience. This class covers color theory, how to mix paints, different application techniques, and uses images of famous paintings for examples and inspiration. This class is for adults and teens.

Painting in Acrylics or Oils

This class is structured for beginning to advanced painters. In a workshop setting, students have the opportunity to interact with each other, as well as the instructor, to maximize the class experience. Students work in their choice of water mixable oils or acrylics and work on a combination of landscapes, portraits, and still lifes.

Watercolor Painting
Wilda Sundberg
Using transparent watercolors, students work on location when weather permits and the Annex on rainy days. Instructor gives demonstrations and critiques; emphasizing technique, color, and design. Beginners have the opportunity of working with advanced students in class.

Oriental Painting

Beginning students learn the basics of oriental painting focusing on four paragons: the orchid, the bamboo, the plum, and the chrysanthemum. Intermediate students learn how to paint a few flowers and a variety of fruits. Advanced students learn how to paint trees, rocks, mountains, and waterfalls for landscapes.

Beginning Ceramics on the Wheel

Explore all that the potter’s wheel has to offer and create a variety of bowls, cups, jars, vases, and pitchers. Classes include demonstrations, group exercises and one-on-one guidance. In addition to wheel work, students gain knowledge about decoration techniques such as wax resist, stamping, and carving. Students will also be able to glaze their work. Students learn techniques but are also given creative freedom, as this class balances practical issues with aesthetics. Ages 15 through adult, for complete beginners and novices alike.

Acrylic Finished Clay Tiles

Create up to 3 decorative wall decorations or trivets. This is a perfect introduction for the beginner or novice wanting to explore different texture treatments. The bisque ware pieces will then be finished with acrylic paints. Ages 14 to adult.

Intermediate Ceramics on the Wheel

Expand your knowledge of the potter’s wheel, diving into trickier forms like large serving dishes, teapots and lidded jars. Classes include demos, group exercises and one-on-one guidance. In addition to wheel work, students gain knowledge about more complex construction techniques like darting, paddling and handbuilding methods to complement their wheel thrown pieces. Students can also glaze their work. Students learn techniques but are encouraged to express themselves as this class fosters both skills and aesthetics. Ages 15 through adult, for intermediate to advanced potters.

Clayspace Independent Study
Kathe Umlauf
Students gain round-the-clock access to ClaySpace and work independently on their own schedule. This includes use of the wheels, slab roller, extruder, tables, and kilns. Applicants must be knowledgeable in working with clay and studio equipment. Contact the Erie Art Museum for application. Fees start at $50/month for 50 hours or less monthly usage. Independent study students must be Museum members. A one time, refundable security/key deposit of $120 is due at the time of application.

Participation in ClaySpace classes includes open studio every Satruday from
11 – 2 p.m. During this time students can work on class projects or use the studio equipment including the potters’ wheels for their own personal
creative interests.
