Beginning Digital Photography

This class covers both the technical and artistic aspects of taking good pictures. This includes basic camera functions, composition, capturing movement, using light and basic computer photoediting. Each session devotes time to critiquing student work. A camera with interchangeable lenses is ideal, but any digital camera is acceptable.

Oriental Painting
Esther Sung A. Hong
Beginning students will learn the basics of oriental painting focusing on four paragons: the orchid, the bamboo, the plum, and the chrysanthemum. Intermediate students will learn how to paint a few flowers and a variety of fruits. Advanced students will learn how to paint trees, rocks, mountains, and waterfalls for landscapes.

Beginning Drawing and Painting

This class will introduce basic techniques to adults who have little or no art experience. Students will create still lifes, figure drawings, and utilize the art from current exhibits. This class will provide a broad exposure to a variety of media such as pencil, conte crayon, watercolor, and acrylic. This class is also appropriate for youth looking for a broadly focused art experience.

New Approaches to Life Drawing

In an open studio setting, students will work from photos and from a nude model to create quick gestures and work up to longer poses.

Landscape Painting
Fran Schanz
Students work in their choice of oils or acrylics to hone their present skills and learn new ways of approaching landscapes. The format is fairly loose and the atmosphere congenial and supportive to accommodate beginners as well as advanced painters. In a workshop setting, students will work with the instructor and interact with other students to maximize the class experience. The first session and during inclement weather will be held in the classroom, all other classes will meet at a scenic location.

Watercolor Painting

Using transparent watercolors, students work on location when weather permits and the Annex on rainy days. Instructor gives demonstrations and critiques; emphasizing technique, color, and design. Beginners have the opportunity of working with advanced students in class.

Precious Metals Jewelry Making

Students will learn jewelry fabricating and casting techniques. Tools are supplied, but not materials. A list of materials, shop rules, and an outline will be distributed at the first class.

Beaded Jewelry Creation
Christine French
Exploring different beading techniques, students will create a variety of seed bead jewelry. Students will create a bracelet, a necklace, and several pairs of earrings.

Henna Body Art Workshop
Learn about this ancient temporary tattoo tradition practiced by women across Africa and the Orient. Get your own henna design done by Erie's best practitioners from Somalia, Sudan, and India or learn how to apply your own. Bring a friend and a camera; this will be a mini multi-cultural social festival!

African Dance

A great way to learn about culture, get exercise, and have fun. Many Africans find that it also helps ease back pain. Our instructors grew up in Africa and are masters of Acholi song and dance. This class is open to both beginners and seasoned dancers, men and women, teens and adults.

Ceramics For Adults

This class covers making vessels on the wheel (mugs, bowls), hand-building techniques (tiles and sculpture), proper handling, and glazing methods. Each week includes demos and personalized instruction. Beginners learn essentials, more advanced students work independently on personal goals. Each student will create many finished pieces. Ages 15 to adult.

Parent Child Clay

Here is a chance for children to learn alongside a parent, grandparent, or adult friend. All will have an opportunity to throw cups and bowls on the wheel, and learn how to create tiles, boxes, and animal sculptures. The small class size ensures personalized instruction for everyone, especially beginners. Everyone will create lots of finished pieces to take home. Ages 6 to 96. Students 9 and older may take class without an adult.

This class will focus on the poetry of the human face. Using a live model, students will create a bust with an emphasis on capturing likeness using form and anatomy. The bisque fired pieces will be approximately life-sized.

Learn how to make flowerpots and planters for everyday use. An emphasis will be placed on hand-building techniques and creating a decorative, non-glazed surface. An excellent class for beginners. Make gifts for yourself or your gardener friends.

Ceramics For Kids

Learn hand-building techniques and how to throw on the potter's wheel. Students will make many pieces ranging from functional objects to sculptural forms. Proper clay handling and glazing techniques will be taught. Creativity and skills are emphasized equally. Ages 8 to 14

Clay Tiles

Create up to 10 tiles from low fire clay and finish with acrylic paints. This is a perfect introduction for beginners or novices wanting to explore different texture treatments. Students will make trivets, wall decorations or house number signs. Ages 14 to adult

Clayspace Independent Study

For individuals who wish to utilize ClaySpace at their convenience. Gain access to potter's wheels, kilns, and slab table for as little as $50/month. Contact Kelly at the Erie Art Museum for details. Starts April 1.
First Fridays – a Preschool Program
Every first Friday of the month from 10-11 a.m. the Museum offers a special program for 3-6 year olds and their families. Museum staff lead adults and kids through exploring one of the exhibits using story, song, and art-making. Cost is $5 per child. Please call to reserve a space in advance.
