Kid's Classes & Workshops

Clay for Kids

Ryan Myers
An introduction to clay and the multitude of possibilities it presents as an art form. The class offers structured projects with lots of room for creativity. Students make cups, pots, and small sculptures with coil and slab methods and get a chance to try the potter’s wheel. Ages 4 and up. Children under 8 must take the class with an adult.

Sundays for 6 weeks

Wheel Throwing for Kids
Ryan Myers
The potter’s wheel is challenging and rewarding and a great way to learn discipline and self expression. Using the wheel, children create and glaze lots of cups, bowls, and vases that they can take home. No experience necessary. Ages 10 and up.

Cartooning and Comic Book Drawing
Jude Shingle
Students learn the fundamentals of drawing by creating their own cartoons and comic book characters. Projects include creating comic strips, cartoon characters, working with word balloons, and exaggerating actions. Students of all skill levels can gain from this fun and entertaining class and they are invited to draw according to their interests. Ages 6 to 12.

Hula Hoop Making Workshop
Jennifer Dennehy
Students create their own properly sized and designed hoop to take home. Class begins with an overview of the history of “hula hooping” and its influence in the fitness world in addition to its development into a creative movement art form. After their hoops are complete students learn the basic techniques of hooping and a few tricks as well. Ages 10 to adult.

Digital Photography on Clay

Want a new way to show off your photographs? Try firing them onto your own beautiful hand-made tiles! Learn to make ceramic tiles and to transfer images using a laser jet printer and decal. Class includes group demonstrations, one-on-one guidance and an introduction to Photoshop. Each student takes home a finished grouted tile tray, rimmed mirror, or other piece of art showcasing your very own photographs! Students can print full color photographs or black and white. Ages 14 to adult.

Beginning Digital Photography
Art Becker
Students cover the basic use of a digital camera: learn how to compose and capture the moment, how to photograph still and moving objects, how to use light, and how to work in low light conditions. Students are introduced to photo editing software. Although a camera with interchangeable lenses is ideal, any digital camera is acceptable for use with this class.

Digital Photography: The Next Step
Art Becker
Students work on developing their own artistic vision and learn to “see” as a photographer, while advancing their technical knowledge. This class presents shooting at twilight and at night, and covers some studio lighting techniques. For those who have completed the Beginning Digital Photo class or already fully understand the features of their camera and photo editing software. A camera that has options beyond automatic settings is advised.

This course welcomes all -- absolute beginners to more advanced painters. The class provides a supportive group atmosphere with plenty of one-on-one instruction. Students work in acrylics or non-volatile oil paints on subjects of their choosing.

Intro to Printmaking

Develop your own design by exploring block printing and monotypes. Students will carve soft cut blocks, apply ink and print to create their own series of hand printed greeting cards in addition to other creative projects.

Absolute Beginner: How to Draw

This class introduces basic techniques and materials to those who have no art experience. Students learn the fundamentals of drawing: looking closely, drawing what you see, and learning to use the tools of drawing. This class provides exposure to a variety of drawing media such as pencil and conte crayon.

Sketchbook Studio

This class is for beginners who have some art experience, those who made art in the past desiring a refresher course, and for art-avid youth looking to hone their skills. The class covers basic techniques in a studio environment where students work more independently. Students create still lifes, figure drawings, and utilize the art from current exhibits while exploring a variety of media such as conte crayon and pencil.

Students learn the basics of watercolor painting through fun and interesting exercises. Topics include the fundamentals of color theory, using painting tools and materials, and basic principles of representational art. This class promises to be relaxed and helpful for absolute beginners, while more advanced artists will be challenged. All students are encouraged to experiment and pursue personal expression as well as developing their technical skill.

In a workshop setting, students have the opportunity to interact with each other, as well as the instructor, to maximize the class experience. Using transparent watercolors, students work on location when weather permits and at the museum on rainy or snowy days. Instructor gives demonstrations and critiques; emphasizing technique, color, and design. Beginners have the opportunity of working with advanced students in class.

Oriental Painting

Beginning students learn the basics of oriental painting focusing on four paragons: the orchid, the bamboo, the plum, and the chrysanthemum. Intermediate students learn how to paint a few flowers and a variety of fruits. Advanced students learn how to paint trees, rocks, mountains, and waterfalls for landscapes.

Ceramics on the Wheel

For both beginning and intermediate students. Learn a variety of techniques by creating cups, bowls and other vessels. Intermediate students create more advanced forms such as pitchers, lidded jars, and even teapots! Classes include demos, group exercises, and one-on-one guidance. Students also learn decoration techniques such as wax resist, stamping, and carving, and can glaze their work. All are given creative freedom and are challenged to develop their own personal aesthetic! Ages 14 to adult.

Exploring Animal Forms

Beginners and intermediate students learn to create animal forms from observation. Explore the unique questions concerning the structure of living creatures and how to replicate those in clay. Classes comprise of demos, working from pictures and objects, and learning how to create sculptural forms. Students are offered a level of freedom in choosing subject matter and surface treatments. Ages 14 and up.

Clayspace Independent Study
Julia Weber
Students gain round-the-clock access to ClaySpace and work independently on their own schedule. This includes use of the wheels, slab roller, extruder, tables, and kilns. Applicants must be knowledgeable in working with clay and studio equipment. Contact the Erie Art Museum for application. Fees start at $50/month for 50 hours or less monthly usage. Independent study students must be Museum members. A one time, refundable security/key deposit of $120 is due at the time of application.

Blacksmithing Basics Workshop
Greg Gehner
Students learn basic blacksmithing techniques by making one (or many) functional hooks to take home. Topics include: safety, equipment, heating metal, hand hammer control, and various hot iron forging techniques. Participants focus upon the techniques of “drawing tapers, spreading, and upsetting” to achieve varied hook designs. Taught by a blacksmith and professional artist in his Cambridge Springs studio. Ages 14 and up, no experience required.

Precious Metals Jewelry Making
Janice & Daniel Niebauer
Students learn jewelry fabricating and casting techniques (from “beginner basics” to advanced) and learn how to use the traditional hand tools plus in so doing, gain an appreciation of the century old methods of making handcrafted jewelry. The first class is devoted to a slide show and discussion. Each student is briefed on good jewelry design and layout techniques while following an outlined personal “project action plan.” Each student then develops his or her individual project from idea to completion. Tools are supplied for use, but not materials. A list of materials, shop rules and handouts is distributed at the first class.

Indian Embroidery and Design

Students learn the basic techniques of Indian embroidery as traditionally used in Indian clothing. Upon completion of the course, each student will have completed a unique square of cloth to take home. Participants will learn techniques such as aari, resham, bead, sequin, coin and zardosi work. In addition to the class hours, practice sessions will scheduled during the week.
