Kids As Curators - 2009

Harding School amassed collections of objects brought from home that demonstrated pattern.  They then created, with the assistance of artist-in-residence Kathe Umlauf-Brumbaugh, sculptures made from these objects.

The Experience Academy of General McLane High School documented the outdoor amphitheater they built with a photo essay, a 1/6-scale model of the amphitheater, collections of artifacts gathered from the woods, and a tree identification game.

Walnut Creek students grappled with the theme of survival.  With artist-in-residence John Vahanian, they constructed humanoid cabinets that held objects that demonstrating how they personally dealt with hard times.

     • Left my heartbeat pounding and left myself in awe. Not only was my
school's exhibit awesome but the other schools were too.

  • I thought it was really neat to see how regular kids like myself would be able to make something so professional.
  • I was in total awe. I thought I was dreaming. I really thought it was grand and super awesome.
  • I thought that it really displayed our work well and let the public be aware of what we were doing for the past couple months.
  • Hopefully this program can expand from the Erie School District to all over America so every kid can get an opportunity to enjoy this learning opportunity.
  • We created our own exhibit for the Erie Art Museum.  That was so much fun and exciting.  Now I am so exhausted, but I am exhausted in a good way.
  • When I first walked in, it was kind of weird, but then I understood what it all meant.
  • Wow! I can't believe the things I worked on turned out like they did.
